The form factor of the motherboard describes its general shape, what sorts of cases and power supplies it can use, and its physical organization.
www.formfactors.org3
Mini-ATX
This form factor is basically the same as ATX with a smaller allowable board size. Mini-ATX = 11.2" x 8.2"
(ATX = 12" x 9.6")
Mini-ITX
A small, highly-integrated form factor, designed for small devices such as thin clients and set-top boxes.
ATX
Created in 1995. As of 2007, it is a popular form factor for commodity motherboards. Typical size is 9.6x12" although some companies extend that to 10x12".
BTX
The next-generation successor to the ATX motherboard form factor. Balanced Technology Extended (BTX)specifies a new layout for heat-generating components on the motherboard, to allow in-line airflow for system cooling, reducing the number of fans needed, offering thermal headroom for future high power components, and enabling a broader range of standards-based system designs. More information is available at New form factor with in line layout optimized to easily enable different form factors. BTX = 12.8" x 10.5"
Barebones
Barebones describes a combination of a motherboard, chassis, power supply and other potential components that are sold as a single unit. The manufacturer has the ability to provide a specialized or unique form factor with a barebones PC since they control the motherboard, chassis and power supply. These systems can be assembled into a complete PC using industry standard components.
ExtendedATX
Used in rackmount server systems. Typically used for server-class type motherboards with dual processors and too much circuitry for a standard ATX motherboard. The mounting hole pattern for the upper portion of the board matches ATX. EATX = 12" x 13"
Flex ATX
Backward compatible for ATX or micro ATX chassis and power supply, Flex ATX accommodates very small PCs as well as new consumer designs (pyramid shapes, all in ones, slim line, and others).
WTX
A large design for servers and high-end workstations featuring multiple CPUs and hard drives.
MicroATX
A smaller variant of the ATX form factor (about 25% shorter). Compatible with most ATX cases, but has fewer slots than ATX, for a smaller power supply unit. Very popular for desktop and small form factor computers as of 2007.
MicroBTX
The next-generation successor to the ATX motherboard form factor. Balanced Technology Extended (BTX)specifies a new layout for heat-generating components on the motherboard, to allow in-line airflow for system cooling, reducing the number of fans needed, offering thermal headroom for future high power components, and enabling a broader range of standards-based system designs. More information is available at New form factor with in line layout optimized to easily enable different form factors. MicroBTX = 10.4" x 10.5"

Different generations of processors have different processor packages as technology evolves. A motherboard must be based on a chipset that supports the socket for your desired processor.
LGA771
771 pin package supporting the newest Dual-Core Intel® Xeon® processor 5000 series.
LGA1366
1366-pin package supporting the Intel(R) Core i7 Processor.
LGA-775 (FC-LGA4 package)
The FC-LGA4 package is used with Intel® processors designed for the LGA775 socket. FC-LGA4 is short for Flip Chip Land Grid Array 4. FC (Flip Chip) means that the processor die is on top of the substrate on the opposite side from the LAND contacts. LGA (LAND Grid Array) refers to how the processor die is attached to the substrate. The number 4 stands for the revision number of the package.
PGA 478 (FC-PGA2)
FC-PGA2 packages are similar to the FC-PGA package type, except these processors also have an Integrated Heat Sink (IHS). The integrated heat sink is attached directly to the die of the processor during manufacturing. Since the IHS makes a good thermal contact with the die and it offers a larger surface area for better heat dissipation, it can significantly increase thermal conductivity. The FC-PGA2 package is used in Pentium III and Intel Celeron processor (370 pins) and the Pentium 4 processor (478 pins).
mPGA 479
479-pin package
mPGA 604
FC-mPGA604
mPGA 603 (PGA)
PGA is short for Pin Grid Array, and these processors have pins that are inserted into a socket. To improve thermal conductivity, the PGA uses a nickel plated copper heat slug on top of the processor. The pins on the bottom of the chip are staggered. In addition, the pins are arranged in a way that the processor can only be inserted one way into the socket. The PGA package is used by the Intel Xeon™ processor, which has 603 pins.
PGA 423 (OOI)
OOI is short for OLGA. OLGA stands for Organic Land Grid Array. The OLGA chips also use a flip chip design, where the processor is attached to the substrate facedown for better signal integrity, more efficient heat removal and lower inductance. The OOI then has an Integrated Heat Spreader (IHS) that helps heatsink dissipation to a properly attached fan heatsink. The OOI is used by the Pentium 4 processor, which has 423 pins.

PCI-X
PCI-X (Peripheral Component Interconnect Extended) is a computer bus and expansion card standard designed to supersede PCI. It is a double-wide version of PCI, running at up to four times the clock speed, but is otherwise similar in electrical implementation and uses the same protocol.PCI-X revised the PCI standard by doubling the maximum clock speed (from 66 MHz to 133 MHz
PCI
The Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) is the specification that was used by the computing industry from 1992 until 2004 as the primary local bus system within a computer. PCI will likely be around for some time, used in implementations that don't require the performance gains of PCI Express. In fact, for the time being, many desktops systems will probably offer PCI expansion slots right alongside one or more PC Express slots.
